Some things we’ll look at

  • One factor examined is the number and length of showers your household has per day. If you have a typical household with a man, a woman and two teenage children, there’s likely to be lots of showers and water and gas consumption may be quite high. In this case we can suggest energy savings through a more efficient hot water heater or determine if the pipes are insulated properly.

  • Wash your clothes in cold water to save energy consumption and you’ll be surprised at just how good a result you’ll get. There’s no need for hot water for standard washing loads. Using a clothes line instead of a dryer will give you a big energy savings.

  • The thermostat on your heating system will be checked. If it’s set too high, it can be draining power unnecessarily. Maybe you leave the heater on when you don’t really need it. You can always wear warm clothes or cover yourself with a blanket instead of running the heater all the time. There can be huge savings as a result of setting your thermostat just a little higher than you are accustomed to.

  • The same goes for air conditioning. A hot day means less clothing and more drinks. Keep ice cubes in the freezer to suck on and use ice packs to cool down. Only run the air conditioner when necessary as it does suck up lots of power. Don’t leave it on if you’re not in the room. Install ceiling and attic fans to help cool the house down so you don’t need the air conditioner as often. Did you also know that you need to reverse your ceiling fan’s oscillating direction during changes in seasons?

  • If you go through the house and look for anywhere that leaks air to the outside and then block them, you can potentially save up to 30% on your energy bills and still keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in the summer months. Is your home well insulated? If not, your energy bill will be higher than average.

  • Check out every light fitting and the types of light bulbs used. If you replace them with more efficient varieties such as Compact Fluorescent Lights, LED’s or Halogen you can save lots of money. Turning off lights and power switches in rooms not in use will save you even more money.

  • Consider installing solar panels on your roof to replace current power sources. Solar power is far cheaper although there are some drawbacks such as not always being able to use it at night. However, it can greatly reduce your power bills. Solar power is becoming more common and available which has greatly lowered the price to make this affordable for more homeowners.

  • Having LNI Home conduct a home energy survey is a great way to reduce your bills. You may not even realize some of the things that are literally eating up your power until the results are revealed. You have nothing to lose and money to gain!
